The encyclopedia is in three parts.
part one describes the origins of the tank and trace the proliferation of purposes to which tracklaying armoured fighting vehicles have been put,with the consequent specialisation of design.
part two deals with the development and modern practice of the constituent parts of a tank,the final chapter describing the methods that have been evolved to try and counter the massive strength of the tank on the battlefield.
part three consist of the national list of tanks -those built is each country together with any local modifications of vehicles built elsewhere.
in the case of all the important tank producers ,the country's list of vehicles is introduced by an account of the salient points in its particular tank history.there is a glossary explaining in detail all the technical terms connected with tanks and their characteristics,and a comprehensive bibliography .

the encyclopedia is illustrated with over 400 photographs and diagrams.many of these have rarely been seen before.the include a range of experimental types which form the links in the progress of tank design
